The Future Is Now

Parker was spanked last night for the first time. She was obviously testing me so I warned her, she didn’t stop jumping on her grandparent’s bed so I put her on my knee and thrice spanked her bare bottom. She was silent after the first one so I increased the velocity of the next one which produced the results I was after…waaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!…the third one was only because, like picture-hanging, spanking should be done in odd numbers.

I held her as she cried, she eventually calmed down, and I took her back to the dinner table. I used it as a threat later in the evening when she disobeyed and it deterred her so at least it did show some results. I’m sure it’ll be used again, that girl loves to disobey.

Fetus Envy

It’s Tuesday morning, June 24th and Georgia is officially a day late. I predicted this…not sure what that was based on, just basic SOML (Story Of My Life) I guess. This weekend was especially hot which didn’t make things any easier for Laura. I don’t envy her a bit, although I do hate this 24/7 on-call feeling I have that at a moment’s notice I have to drop whatever I’m doing and help Laura bring Georgia into the world. Not that I don’t want to do that, I JUST WANT A SET TIME AND DATE. It’s just plain rude not to give notice for these kinds of things. But make no mistake…I do not envy her right now. All I can do is try hard not to be a smart-ass and help her through it. Let’s just hope it’s a quickie!

I also do not envy little Georgia. The idea of what she’s got to go through to get born (head first through the cervix, etc…) is rather extreme. It reminds me of the troubles I had moving around under the house through this little hole to get through the concrete foundation so that I can get to the other side of the house. Maybe birth is where humans develop their claustrophobic inclinations. She’s probably really comfortable right now; food’s being provided 24/7, no chores, no nagging parents, and nobody hovering over you with their bad breath telling you how cute you look. I don’t blame her for stayin’ in the womb for a little extra time. If I could, I’d join her!

Think about me going through labor while you're eating lunch. Maybe it will make you feel better.

Parker's First Rhyme

Parker memorized her first rhyme from a Dr. Seuss book. In case you can't understand her, the words are...

'My hat is old
My teeth are gold
I have a bird I like to hold
My shoe is off
My foot is cold
And now my story is all told'

Father's Day 2008 Baseball Game

I spent my Father’s Day 2008 in the following manner…

Laura cooked a wonderful breakfast called the “Wakey Wakey Eggs n Bakey Crossanwich”…fast becoming my favorite breakfast meal. After that Parker gave me her gift which was a plaster image of her little hand…very nice. After that it was off to play a Father’s Day baseball game. We soundly beat the first place team which produced an odd feeling being that we’re usually the ones getting beat up on. As of late I’m enjoying playing baseball more and more. I started the season feeling it was more of a chore but recently I've found myself enjoying it. Maybe it’s because I went 4 for 4 last week including a “wall banging” double. On Father’s Day I went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs.
My family couldn’t make the picture…both were taking naps the time this photo was taken.

Empire Burlesque

...a brief message from an overactive cortex...

WE ARE AN EMPIRE.

I never hear (or read) the term "The American Empire" used in describing our foreign policy. I contend that now more than ever the notion of "The American Empire" is accurate. We've been a continental empire (some would say a hemispheric empire) since at least the Mexican-American War, an international empire since the Spanish American War, a global empire since the end of WWII, and with our eastern march at the wall in Berlin and our western march at the DMZ (the 38th Parallel) in Korea.

Democracies can be empires too, ask the Athenians-not that they were very good at it. History tends to only refer to totalitarian countries as "Empires" but that is simply not accurate. The manner in which we’ve strategically colonized the globe (for our benefit) over time reflects a natural instinct human beings have for self preservation. However, the incredibly hazy line between the rights of autonomy or friend and foe alike and the use of strength for self preservation tends to complicate things threefold.

We are the Roman Empire -- at least, the Western Roman Empire. Russia, of course was the Eastern Roman Empire. The Cold War was the contest to see which would prevail. Now that we've colonized the provinces of Judea, Persia, and Afghanistan, the farthest extent of our ancient Greco-Roman influence. Obviously, Persia is one of the more important areas simply because of the energy it provides us (oil). It’s been over five years since we invaded Iraq in March 2003 and gas prices are at an all-time high (I paid $4.57/gallon last night). Of course, the prior sentence will seem hilarious when this is read two years from now and gas is $6.00 per gallon.

At this time in history Obama and McCain have locked in their party’s nominations and are now starting their national campaign. McCain wants to stay there without a doubt however Obama has made the pledge that he will begin withdrawal of American troops starting six months from when he takes office. He’ll be slowly distancing himself from that statement, you watch. We’ll always be in Iraq-without a doubt.

Stimulus Stilettos

The sign reads, "It's time for you to do your part to stimulate the economy. And there's no better way to kick the economy up a notch than with a really great pair of pumps. Or a new flat screen TV. Or a fabulous bag. Or whatever you've been dying to get your hands on! So don't delay. CELEBRATE THE STIMULUS. TREAT YOURSELF TO SOMETHING SPECIAL TODAY!"

Don't Look Back

Still waiting. We spent the weekend finishing up the rooms as well as preparing all the "newborn baby equipment", and there's quite a lot. When you look at all the stuff we have for a newborn baby one has to wonder...does something that weighs 7-8 pounds and around 20 inches really require all the stuff we have ready for her. I mean between the baby swing, the bassonette, the infant car seat, the stroller, the double stroller, etc..., is it all necessary? No, it's not but it's available.

One has to learn not to question some things and just stroll along, but looking back and analyzing what one is doing is compeltely natural, and sometimes...helpful. But for now, we're just waiting for something to happen. Last night was Sunday and a large part of me was hoping for something to happen more sooner than later. I was suffering from a malignant form of what's known as the Sunday Blues (in E minor).

Sleeping Beauty

This past weekend was a major milestone in the life of Parker Johanna Powers. She moved to her new bedroom, and her new “Big Girl” bed. She was very excited about it and has made the transition with incredible ease. She even offered up the idea of Georgia sleeping in her crib when she comes.

Needless to say we’ve been preparing her room for the change for quite a long time. We are slowly getting it done however these things take time with our busy schedules. I think it’ll be finalized this weekend once shelving is put up and all of her toys are moved into her room.

It's interesting how our dispositions are determined by hers. It's fair to say that we're as excited as she is about these life events. It's not like we're doing it all for her, we're equally doing it for ourselves as well. Which further supports my belief that having and rearing children is a selfish act. Not that it's a bad thing but we're doing this for ourselves right? Having children enhances our lives while at the same time creates a new one.

Funny how that works.

My Creationism Has Been Aborted

Creativity has left the building.

I can’t write a song if my life depended on it. I don’t know what happened but ever since Laura’s birthday I have absolutely no ideas floating in my head. No lyrical ideas, no melodies, no chord progressions, no witty ideas for song titles, no nothing! I ain’t got it. I fear that if I had to write a song I would come up with diddly-squat. Usually it takes a project idea to get my creative juices boiling but still, even if there was a project in the ether I fear I would have nothing to contribute.

Funny how everything goes into shut-down mode without notice. During the two months it took to make the Magnificent Fantastic cd, I was coming with song ideas all the time…even impressing myself with regards to the quantity. With Laura’s birthday cd I wrote (and recorded) four decent songs in less than a month and now I don’t have anything going on. Is it all based on inspiration?

There seems to be a real big chasm in my creative process, it’s more like a moat infested with man-eating alligators.
