The State of Georgia

So, what’s in a name? Not very much really, just the simplicity of aural imagery. She wasn’t named after anyone or anything in particular. Neither the state nor the nation is of any regard in this matter. The etymology of the word is of little importance to us. This may be odd for some parents who deem it important that their child’s name has some deep meaning that evokes something important to them. There may be some homage to the Georgia Peach but I’m not sure.

The only issue we’re having with regarding to names is nicknames. Parker’s got five of them, Georgia has zero. Perhaps I will consult Parker on what a good nickname is for Georgia. Some ideas…’Gigi’, ‘Gia’, ‘G.L.’, “Jojo”, nope…nothing works. I will assuredly antagonize her when she’s older by constantly referring to her as “George” every chance I get.

While naming your children is fun, what’s more enjoyable is naming your pets. When it comes to pets you are given the opportunity to attach a silly moniker to your pet that when juxtaposed to the pet itself, really makes no sense. Our last two cats we had were named Irma and Rosa. When I went to pick them up they were the last two kittens of a litter that seemed to be neglected by this Mexican family living in squalor in beautiful Oakland, California. Unfortunately, like some people I know, they didn’t take to the notion of children very well so they left home and ventured out to the great unknown. I do hope they’re doing okay. Here's an old picture of Laura practicing her breastfeeding technique on Irma.

I’m sure it’s the same for all parents and pet owners. Once your child develops a little personality it doesn’t matter what you’ve named him or her, it just fits. At least that’s they way it has always been for us whether we’re talking about our children or our pets.

Just for the record, I have always loved the name Georgia. Ever since I first heard it when I bought a music book for my saxophone lessons (5th grade). Johnny Mathis' 'Georgia On My Mind' was in that book and was my favorite song to play. Later, when I heard Willie Nelson's version I loved it even more.
